Ecologist: The Belarusian nuclear power plant will encourage the development of green economy

The commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will contribute to the development of green economy in the country. Yuri Solovyov, Chairman of the Board of the Belarusian public association Ecological Initiative, made the statement during a briefing in BelTA’s press center on 16 December.
Yuri Solovyov said: “The commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will contribute to the development of green economy in Belarus, particularly with regard to the processing of all kinds of waste. Unfortunately, today we have to state that work in the field does not proceed the way we would like it to.”
Yuri Solovyov remarked that enterprises capable of processing wastes are still available in Belarus in insufficient numbers. As a result, waste is dumped and buried in all sorts of places, resulting in emissions into the environment one way or another and the deteriorating environmental situation. “We expect that once the nuclear power plant is commissioned, we will be able to acquire all the competitive advantages that will allow providing waste-processing factories with sufficiently cheap electricity,” said the ecologist. Access to such energy will prompt the development of the waste-processing industry. Respectively the environmental situation in the country will be improved.
Yuri Solovyov referred to France as an example. Over 70% of the electricity generated in France is produced by nuclear power plants. The country boasts the largest volume of processing of hazardous chemical waste. The French waste-processing enterprises enjoy a competitive advantage in their access to cheap energy.
