IRRS mission hailed as way for countries to engage in open dialogue

14.10.2016
Hosting an IRRS mission is a way to engage in a very open dialogue with the outside world, Peter Johnston, Director of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety in the IAEA Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, told reporters, BelTA has learned.

An IRRS mission is a way to engage in a very open dialogue with the outside world and to show what a country is doing within its regulatory framework,” Peter Johnston said.

Prior to hosting a mission a country makes self-assessment in order to develop concrete steps to bring its regulatory framework in line with the IAEA standards and requirements. The results of Belarus’ self-assessment largely coincided with the IRRS findings.

Belarus hosted its first IRRS mission on 2-14 October. The major goal of the mission was to evaluate the conformity of Belarus’ regulatory infrastructure and regulating activity with the IAEA safety standards. The team offered 25 recommendations and 20 suggestions for Belarus.
