MINSK, 11 October (BelTA) – The energy intensity of Belarus' GDP has dropped by 2.1 times since 2000, BelTA learned from Deputy Chairman of the State Standardization Committee, Director of the Energy Effectiveness Department Vitaly Kretsky as the Belarusian Energy and Ecology Forum opened in Minsk on 11 October.

Vitaly Kretsky said: “The country's development through energy saving, higher energy effectiveness, through the use of local fuel and energy resources is an objective necessity today and a priority direction for enhancing economic security. Not only of Belarus but of all countries across the globe regardless of whether they have ample supplies of energy resources of their own or not.”

A persistent government policy in the area of energy saving has been implemented in Belarus for 30 years now. “By utilizing cutting-edge experience, new R&D products, equipment, and materials, Belarus has created an effective system, which has allowed reducing the GDP energy intensity by 2.1 times in comparison with 2000,” the official said.

“At the same time we understand that it is necessary to continue working to reduce the cost of manufacturing industrial products if we want our economy to stay competitive. We are interested in introducing our energy-saving, ecological technologies in other countries. We are also interested in using various innovative products inside our country, including by means of setting up joint ventures,” Vitaly Kretsky concluded.
