Belarus, Russia working out new Union State programs on nuclear, radiation safety

08.01.2024
MINSK, 8 January (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia are preparing new programs of the Union State of Belarus and Russia in the area of nuclear and radiation safety, BelTA learned from Head of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) Olga Lugovskaya in an interview.

Olga Lugovskaya said: “Two Union State programs have already been drafted. One of them touches upon the development of infrastructure for radioactive waste management. It is related to the construction of a radioactive waste burial site in the country but will cover a broader range of matters. For instance, matters relating to the development of the workforce potential, the development of regulatory documents, the organization of research activities.”

The second program has the working title “Detectors and crystals” and focuses on the radiation control system: spectrometers, radiometers, dosimeters, radiation environment analyzers, and other devices. “This pool of instruments needs periodic upgrades and repairs so that the system as a whole could do its job. Matters concerning parts and components for making these devices are of current interest amid sanctions. Insufficient attention was paid to the matter both in Belarus and the Russian Federation in the 1990-2000s. It is now necessary to revive the industry,” the Gosatomnadzor head noted.

Work continues on Chernobyl-related matters. “We interact with the Russian Emergencies Ministry. A draft program on joint efforts within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia is highly ready. We hope that the Union State program will be launched as from 2025. Apart from that, a Union State program in the field of emergency preparedness and response is being developed between the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry and the Russian one,” Olga Lugovskaya pointed out.

In the future taking into account the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant proposals have been made on a program, which will be related to the regulation of the safe usage of nuclear energy installations. “We are going to work out this program together with the Russian Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostechnadzor),” the Gosatomnadzor head specified.
