Belarus to continue exporting electricity after nuclear power plant goes online

Belarus has already reached agreements on exporting electricity in 2020 after the first unit of the nuclear power plant is commissioned, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk.

The official said: “Today we have a lot of proposals and have signed a number of contracts on exporting electricity. In 2019 we expect we will be able to double electricity export in comparison with last year. I think once the nuclear power plant is commissioned, our export potential will grow from the technical point of view and the economic one.” In his words, contracts on exporting Belarusian electricity have been signed not only for this year but for the future as well.

“It is possible to export electricity using the connections we have to the power grids of Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, and Russia. If contracts with good prospects are available, these connections can be expanded,” the deputy energy minister added. “This is why export will not go to zero. I think it will only grow higher.”

Speaking about Lithuania’s complaints about the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, Mikhail Mikhadyuk pointed out that Lithuania buys Belarusian electricity now. “There is nothing disgraceful about it. Economy will put everything in its proper place,” the deputy energy minister said.
