MINSK, 4 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian nuclear power plant will allow making electric trucks in the country in the future, BelTA learned from Denis Karas, a member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.
Denis Karas said: “I am convinced that the possibility is under consideration in Belarus. Green fuel – hydrogen – can be manufactured at the Belarusian nuclear power plant. In the future it will enable us to work on an environmentally friendly internal combustion engine for freight vehicles used for large-capacity shipments.”
Belarus became a genuine nuclear power two years ago when the country's first nuclear power plant went operational near Ostrovets in November 2020. It was built according to Russian technologies. The project provides for building two units of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The first one was commissioned two years ago. The second one is nearly ready for operation. The two units of the Belarusian nuclear power plant are expected to satisfy roughly half of the country's demand for electricity.
Denis Karas went on saying: “The nuclear power plant means more than our national energy security. It also means confidence in tomorrow. In our ability to live in comfort. Everything relies on electricity these days. It is impossible to imagine many processes without it in the age of computer technologies, automation, and digitization. We are also independent in this regard thanks to the Belarusian nuclear power plant.”
The MP also reminded that the updated Constitution of the Republic of Belarus came into effect on 15 March 2022 and gave an impulse to new promising directions, including the development of nuclear energy industry for peaceful purposes. Denis Karas also noted that a lot of attention had been paid to the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant even before construction began. The nuclear power plant was built according to a design of the Russian corporation Rosatom. Russia is a world leader in the area of nuclear technologies. Russian nuclear power plants are some of the safest nuclear power plants in the world. “Even before the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was commissioned, specialists of the International Atomic Energy Agency came and gave recommendations. We've observed them rigorously, this is why our nuclear power plant has been recognized as one of the world's safest,” he said.
