IAEA, Japan, China help Belarus deal with Chernobyl catastrophe consequences

20.04.2022
MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – A number of international projects are being implemented to help Belarus overcome consequences of the catastrophe at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Sergei Shparlo, Head of the Department for Mitigation of the Aftermath of Chernobyl Accident of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry, made the statement at a meeting of BelTA’s Expert Community project held on 20 April to discuss “Chernobyl – a land where people can live. Belarusian experience of revival and development of polluted territories”.

For the last few years Belarus has been working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on matters concerning the alleviation of consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Belarus participated in the realization of two international projects. One was a regional project involving Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, and the IAEA titled as “Improving the remediation and management of terrestrial and freshwater environments affected by radioactive material of Chernobyl origin” (RER7010) and the IAEA’s national technical aid project titled as “Controlling the impact of fires on the public and the environment in the Belarusian site of the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl accident and adjacent territories” (BYE9024).

Cooperation continues within the framework of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Program. As part of the program Japan helps acquire medical equipment for healthcare institutions in the affected areas, Sergei Shparlo said. The Chinese embassy also provides humanitarian aid such as aid for children’s rehabilitation and recreation centers, gifts for children, and money certificates for Chernobyl survivors.
