Belarusian nuclear power plant gets another set of steam generators

21.11.2017
MINSK, 20 November (BelTA) – The first set of steam generators for the second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has been delivered to the construction site, BelTA learned from the press service of ASE Group, which is the general designer and the general contractor for building the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

The first set for the second power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has been delivered to the construction site. The set includes two steam generators. A power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant needs four steam generators like that.

The steam generator is part of the core process equipment in the flow circuit of a reactor unit. The steam generator is a heat exchange device designed to produce steam that will be fed to a turbine that will generate electricity.

Core equipment of the reactor plant is being delivered to the construction site now, noted Vitaly Medyakov, ASE Group Vice President for the Belarusian nuclear power plant project. “We expect the transport sluice to be delivered within the next few days,” he said. Both steam generators are now going through incoming control procedures.

The VVER-1200 design, which is used to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant, is one of the world’s most advanced nuclear power plant designs. It is a Generation III+ design and is compliant with all the international norms and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

A combination of active and passive safeguards is the key feature of the VVER-1200 design. A reactor unit boasts a double protective shell and a core catcher to make sure no radiation will be leaked into the environment. The solutions the design has implemented are fully compliant with post-Fukushima nuclear power plant reliability requirements. Nowadays the VVER-1200 design is the most powerful one in the lineup of nuclear reactors made in Russia. The key advantages of VVER-type reactors include high output, longevity, and safety. The reactors are designed to work for 60 years.

ASE Group was created as part of the efforts to form an engineering division of the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom. ASE Group was created by merging the industry’s top companies: NIAEP, ASE, Atomenergoproekt, and Atomproekt. ASE Group is one of the leaders of the world nuclear engineering industry and accounts for over 30% of the global market of nuclear power plant construction services. ASE’s representative offices and operation offices have been opened in 15 countries across the globe. Projects outside of Russia account for nearly 80% of the company’s portfolio.
