Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a project to build a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan National News Agency (UzA) reported.
The project launch ceremony was held in Uzexpocentre during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Uzbekistan. “Today Uzbekistan and the Russian Federation are launching cooperation in a new strategic area: nuclear energy. This project will create a new cluster, contribute to the further development of industrial capacity and promote employment in different sectors of economy,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.
Specialists of the Uzatom agency and Rosatom State Corporation, who were watching the ceremony via videoconferencing, announced the beginning of engineering surveys to select the site for Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant.
The project envisages the construction of two Generation III+ VVER-1200 power units 200MW each, which are the most advanced and safest.
Nuclear power is eco-friendly. Nuclear power plants do not produce harmful CO. Considerable volumes of natural gas will be saved once the nuclear power plant is commissioned. Emissions of carbon dioxide will be reduced to 14 million tonnes and those of nitrogen oxide by 36,000 tonnes.
Uzbekistan’s initiative to implement the National Program on the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes was supported by IAEA experts who expressed their readiness to assist in its implementation.
