Requirements for crucial nuclear power plant control systems refreshed in Belarus

MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) – The Belarusian Emergencies Ministry has updated norms and rules concerning nuclear and radiation safety by the ministry's resolution No.39 of 18 May 2021, BelTA has learned.

The resolution specifies requirements for control systems, which are important for the safety of nuclear power plants, and requirements for emergency power supply systems of nuclear power plants.

The document determines technical requirements for the safe handling of sources of ionizing radiation and radioactive objects with regard to control systems, including for dealing with accidents beyond the design basis. The document specifies requirements for protection against unauthorized access, equipment survival in working order, and requirements for modification and modernization.

As for nuclear power plant emergency power supply systems, the document specifies requirements for designing such systems, requirements for their configuration, installation, prelaunch tuning and operation, power supply for consumers, cables and wiring, accumulator batteries, and backup diesel power plants.

The Emergencies Ministry's resolution No.30 of 30 June 2010 has been invalidated. The new norms will come into force as from 21 July.
