Russia, Argentina sign document on partnership in peaceful use of nuclear energy

Russia and Argentina signed a strategic document on the margins of the G20 summit, confirming their partnership in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, BelTA learned form the communications department of the Rosatom State Corporation.

On Russia's behalf the document was signed by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, on behalf of Argentina by Javier Iguacel, Argentina's Minister of Energy. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Argentina President Mauricio Macri were present at the official ceremony.

“The document will help us bolster the cooperation with our Argentinian partners. All of us, at Rosatom, are certain that this step will incentivise our mutually beneficial cooperation in the application of nuclear technology for peaceful purpose,” Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev said.

One of the fundamental areas of cooperation outlined in the document is the development of various project execution strategies to be applied to large and small capacity NPP construction projects in Argentina. The agreement also suggests joint work on joint projects in third countries, including the construction of research centers and development of their staff capacities. The document provides for joint cooperation in a plethora of areas, including: joint research and personnel training.

According to the document, the parties will also consider the possibility of a joint operation regarding a fleet of floating NPPs based on the Russian design, taking into account the completed construction of the world’s first floating NPP “Akademik Lomonosov”.

A cooperation roadmap to implement specific Russian-Argentine projects in the peaceful use of nuclear energies was also signed at the ceremony.
