Belarus to host IAEA nuclear infrastructure mission in Q1 2020
Belarus is set to host a nuclear infrastructure mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the first quarter of 2020, Belarus’ Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk said as he spoke at the plenary session of the 63rd session of the IAEA General Conference on 16 September, BelTA has learned.

Lithuanian proposal to repurpose Belarusian nuclear power plant ‘ill-advised’
Mikhail Mikhadyuk said: “In my personal opinion, the proposal has been made more out of political reasons. It is economically and technically ill-advised. From the technical point of view it cannot be implemented because we would have to redo virtually everything, destroy what has been done, and reject the equipment that has been delivered.”

Russian loan sufficient to finish building Belarusian nuclear power plant
The deputy energy minister reminded that the Russian loan can be as large as $10 billion and can cover 90% of the construction cost while Belarus is supposed to cover another 10%. The terms were specified when the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant began.

Equipment airlock for second reactor of Belarusian nuclear power plant installed
With the equipment airlock in its designated position, the next step in completing the hermetic shell of the reactor building can begin, noted Vitaly Polyanin, ASE Company Vice President and supervisor of the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction project. Within the next few days specialists will get down to straining the system of prestressed metal cables, which greatly increases the strength of the internal protective shell.

National action plan based on BelNPP stress tests forwarded to government
“Following the stress tests of the Belarusian nuclear power plant and the peer review process, a national action plan was drafted to enhance the safety of the BelNPP above the requirements established by the law. The plan was agreed with interested government agencies and organizations and submitted for scrutiny to the government on 1 February,” Gosatomnadzor informed.

“The IAEA pre-OSART mission is scheduled to start on 1 April 2019. The Energy Ministry has sent formal notification to the IAEA Secretariat,” Viktor Karankevich said.
